The Detroit Lions are heading into Sunday’s matchup holding a 6-7 record this season so far and they’ll be going up against the 7-6 New York Jets. The Lions have won five of their last six games, though they need to stay hot if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Meanwhile, the New York Jets are in the same boat as Detroit, winning five out of their last six matches, which means that Sunday’s matchup could have a playoff feel. With so much on the line, this is definitely one of the most exciting games happening during the weekend.
We could say that this game will be all about the defense, and the Jets are coming off a strong defensive performance versus the Buffalo Bills, holding their offense to a 34% success rate and lowly 23% rushing success rate. New York had four sacks in total and 18 pressures on Bills quarterback Josh Allen, which is nothing to scoff at, and we might see something similar against the Lions.
Even though Detroit has managed to win five games recently, they haven’t had to face strong defenses. Their only encounter in that stretch against a defense inside the top 22 in DVOA ratings were the Bills, which coincidentally is the only game they ended up losing in that stretch.
Other than the Bills, the Lions didn’t struggle that much against any of the Packers, Bears, Giants, Jaguars and Vikings. Sure, taking down Minnesota last weekend is definitely a huge boost to their confidence, but the Jets defensive end is on a whole other level compared to the Vikings.
The Jets quarterback Mike White showed his toughest side against the Bills, and it wouldn’t be crazy to see him play this week even after suffering a rib injury. The Lions tend to sit back in man coverage, but Mike White has the highest EPA/play of any quarterback against the blitz this year. Even though the sample is somewhat small, it’s expected to see White have a solid day against the Lions.
