The quarterback position was the focus of the Buccaneers’ offseason planning. Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask battled it out in the preseason to replace Tom Brady as the starting quarterback. Mayfield came out on top, and he’ll be the one to lead the Bucs against the Vikings this coming Sunday. It will be difficult for Tampa Bay to compete with Minnesota’s potent attack led by quarterback Kirk Cousins and starting wideout Justin Jefferson.
There are a lot of plots in this game, but neither party really needs to worry about the other’s. The Vikings, for one, aimed to rekindle the glory days of their 2022–23 campaign. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, need to shore up an offense that has struggled since losing Tom Brady.
The 2022–23 campaign was a successful one for the Vikings. The duo of Cousins and Jefferson (along with RB Alexander Mattison) led Minnesota to a 13-4 season and a commanding victory in the NFC North. The Vikings had a great regular season, but their hopes of making the playoffs were crushed when they lost in the wild card round to the New York Giants. The Vikings will be determined to keep their winning record intact this week, so they will likely come out strong.
Tom Brady has stated that he will end his football career in February of 2023. The Buccaneers’ offensive was severely hindered as a result. This is Baker Mayfield’s first season as the starting quarterback under head coach Todd Bowles, who is in his second season at the helm. The Bucs’ offseason “will they, won’t they?” Mayfield and Kyle Trask fought for the spotlight. In preseason games, both quarterbacks excelled.
Mayfield completed all six of his passes during his brief stint against the Ravens in the preseason championship game. He threw for 43 yards and a touchdown. In the same game, Trask completed 10 of 31 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown, an impressive percentage. The Buccaneers, with Mayfield at quarterback and Trask in reserve, went into the game determined to prove they could win without Tom Brady.
