One of the Week 1 NFL Matchups features a battle between two AFC South teams: Jacksonville Jaguars versus Indianapolis Colts. Both the Jaguars and the Colts looked strong in preseason. The Jaguars were one of only three undefeated teams in the league, going a perfect 3-0. In preseason play, Indianapolis was 2-1.
The Jacksonville Jaguars won the AFC South last season and defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in the postseason. The Jaguars of Jacksonville had a better record (9-8) than the Titans (7-10). Jacksonville finished the regular season with a perfect 5-for-5 record. Meanwhile, things didn’t work out for Indianapolis. The final record for the Colts was 4-12-1. The Colts have lost their last seven games, dropping them to last place in the NFL.
The 2023 season will begin with the Jacksonville Jaguars hoping to defend their division title. The Jaguars drafted Anton Harrison from Oklahoma and Brenton Strange at tight end in the first round during the offseason. How significant they are this season depends on those two.
The Jaguars will have Trevor Lawrence back at quarterback. According to his 2017 NFL Player Stats profile, he threw for more than 4,100 yards. Christian Kirk, in a breakout season, caught over 25% of them.
Compared to other NFL teams, the Indianapolis Colts have not had a very successful offseason. This team’s star rushing back has missed the last four games due to a buildup of tensions stemming from his willingness to skip practice and games. The Colts will have to start Deon Jackson, their rookie quarterback, and provide him the tools he needs to succeed.
Anthony Richardson, the rookie, will start for the team. He will replace veterans Garnder Minshew and Sam Ehlinger in the starting lineup. Richardson needs to study up extensively on Michal Pittman Jr. Last year, he finished with 975 yards, 75 short of the 1,000-yard mark.
Last year, the Colts finished with one of the worst passing records in the league, with 17 passing touchdowns compared to 20 interceptions. Knowing what to expect for the Indianapolis Colts may be difficult until we see what Richardson can contribute.
