Game Preview

On Thursday night, the San Francisco 49ers will host the New York Giants as they look to start the season with a perfect 3-0 record. San Francisco has won 12 straight games in the regular season and has only started a season with three consecutive wins once in the last 25 years.

The Giants lost 40-0 at home to Dallas in the season opener and were behind 20-0 at halftime in last week’s 31-28 triumph over the Arizona Cardinals, matching a team record. However, after spraining his ankle against the Cardinals, New York may be without standout running back Saquon Barkley.

It’s possible that San Francisco’s top offensive weapon, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, won’t be able to play on Thursday Night Football due to a shoulder injury he sustained in Week 2’s 30-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Even so, the 25-year-old continued to play despite having just three grabs for a total of 43 yards. If Aiyuk can’t play, backups like Deebo Samuel are there for second-year quarterback Brock Purdy to throw to.

Samuel caught six passes for 63 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground, covering 11 yards, in the fourth quarter against the Rams. George Kittle, who tied for third in the NFL with 11 TD catches last season, might see greater playing time if Aiyuk is limited or unable to play. Kittle, who is now 29 years old, had 765 yards on 60 receptions, good for seventh among tight ends, in 2022.

Before catching fire late in the third quarter against Arizona, New York had been outscored 60-0 through the first six quarters of the season. The Giants’ comeback of 24 points in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Cardinals was tied for the largest in team history. In the second half, quarterback Daniel Jones completed 81% of his passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 59 yards and a score on the ground.

The 26-year-old made history for the Giants when, in the second half of the game, he became the first player in franchise history to record 250 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, two TD throws, and a rushing score. In the win, he completed 26 of 37 passes, and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt may now be his primary target.
