The 2023 Philadelphia Eagles are off to a 2-0 start despite a rocky beginning. This Super Bowl contender has gotten off to a slow start due to major defensive injuries and Jalen Hurts’ poor play.
Next up is the shockingly resilient Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so they’ll need to get their act together quickly. Similarly surprising is the Bucs’ 2-0 start, with new quarterback Baker Mayfield seemingly breathing fresh life into this team.
Even though Philadelphia has had a rough start to the season, the oddsmakers still think they can beat a team that is clearly inferior to them. Mayfield has looked like a brand new quarterback so far this season, but he has also faced two of the worst defenses in the NFL in the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears. Tampa Bay’s defense is the only way the game may be more competitive than predicted. To start the year, this defense has been impressive, allowing only 17 points to the Vikings and Bears combined. They have 19 QB hits and 8.0 sacks in the first two games, so you should expect pressure on Monday.
The Eagles, though, have the players necessary to counteract Tampa’s strengths. The pass rush should have no issue disrupting Mayfield’s night with their overwhelming force. The offensive line is more than capable of protecting Jalen Hurts against the Bucs’ defensive backs. Hurts should rediscover his passing poise because of the deficiencies and injuries in Tampa’s secondary.
Philadelphia has nothing to lose by finishing the job on MNF. They have the ability to serve as the Buccaneers’ first real test, and I wouldn’t be surprised if all of Tampa’s early success was just a mirage. It’s not crazy to think that the Eagles will be able to put their early blunders behind them and go for the throat of the Bucs in primetime after playing on Thursday in Week 2.
