Analysis & Picks: Colts vs Ravens 9/24/2023

Game Preview

In Week 3, the Colts and the Ravens meet in a matchup between two AFC clubs that know Baltimore quite decently. Obviously, it’s been a while since the Colts visited Baltimore, and since their previous meeting in 2021, a lot has changed on both sides. This contest is intriguing because both clubs are fresh off divisional victories.

The Ravens might be coming off the greatest victory of the season. The Ravens won 27-24 on the road against Joe Burrow and the Bengals in Week 2. Now 2-0, they have a game against the 1-1 Indianapolis Colts and are in first place in the AFC North. Anthony Richardson, who departed the Colts’ Week 2 win over Houston with a concussion, may not play again this season.

Usually, a team will start urging their quarterback to protect himself after he has been a reckless runner for at least a year, but in Anthony Richardson’s case, it only took two games. Despite suffering injuries in both of the team’s first two games, Richardson has stood out as the most promising of the rookie quarterbacks. He’s scored four total touchdowns against just one pick in his career.

Zay Flowers, another promising rookie, has been electrifying in his first two outings. Week 2 saw him haul in four passes for 62 yards, bringing his total for the season to 70. With 15 targets, Flowers easily dominates as the team’s top target receiver. In second place, with seven, is Odell Beckham Jr.

Baltimore’s linebacking combo of Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith has been among the league’s best, and the secondary held its own against Ja’Marr Chase and company last week despite missing safety Marcus Williams. The Colts still don’t have the firepower to exploit the Ravens, especially without star RB Jonathan Taylor and maybe Richardson.

Losing RB JK Dobbins for the season is a major blow to Baltimore’s chances, led by QB Lamar Jackson and company. The Colts’ run defense has been one of their strengths this season, ranking seventh in the NFL with an average of 78.5 yards allowed per game on the ground. The Ravens offense isn’t at full strength, and neither is wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who recently injured his ankle.
