Game Preview

On Sunday, the undefeated Atlanta Falcons will travel to face the 3-2 Detroit Lions in a game that figures to be among the best in the National Football League so far this week.

The Falcons have started the season with two straight victories. The Falcons won the opening game of the season against the Panthers and followed that up with a victory in Week 2 against the Packers. The Lions were unable to build on their opening night victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, losing in overtime on Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Atlanta Falcons are off to an unexpected 2-0 start, with an average of 24.5 points scored each game. They are giving up 17 points per game on defense. The running game has benefited greatly from rookie Bijan Robinson’s contributions. Early on, he and Tyler Allgeier have been given a substantial amount of carries. On Sunday, Robinson carried the load for the offense, gaining 124 yards on 19 carries.

NFL player stats show that Desmond Ridder was 19 for 32 with a touchdown and an interception, and he also contributed to the victory by rushing for a score. After passing on Drake London in Week 1, Ridder finally located him on Sunday. Six of London’s seven targets were grabbed for 67 yards and a touchdown. For the Atlanta Falcons, this is their season-opening away game.

The Lions, who led 21-17 after three, then trailed 31-21, eventually rallied to level the game in the final minutes. The Lions lost their season opener to the Seahawks when they failed to stop the scoring drive and failed to receive the ball in overtime.

If you look at the NFL stats, Josh Reynolds was the Lions’ main man at receiver. He had two touchdown catches and five receptions for 66 yards. When Seattle tried to run the ball, Detroit’s defense held up well. Only 82 yards were gained by Seattle on the ground. The pass defense was terrible, as Geno Smith and the Seahawks gained 311 yards through the air. The key to the Detroit Lions’ success is preventing turnovers.
