Game Preview

The Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams will meet again on Monday Night Football, this time in a rematch from Super Bowl 56. Although the Rams’ surprising victory over the Seahawks was followed by a home loss to the division rival 49ers, there were encouraging signs for the youthful squad, such as the breakout performance of receiver Puka Nacua.

Even with top WR Cooper Kupp, the 2021 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, on the PUP list (missing at least the first four games), the Rams have looked better than expected in the early going. Puka Nacua, a receiver drafted in the fifth round, has more than made up for Kupp’s absence. Nacua is second in the NFL with 25 receptions and leads the league with 266 receiving yards.

The Cincinnati Bengals are off to another 0-2 start, but this time there seems to be much more cause for concern. The offense failed once again in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and even though Joe Burrow is the highest-paid player in the NFL, he doesn’t play like one. Now that Burrow is injured, Cincinnati may have to try to recover from yet another dismal 0-2 start without its star quarterback.

In 2017, Cincinnati joined an exclusive group of 8 other teams since 1970 to start the season 0-2. The Bengals’ 27-24 home loss to the Ravens on Sunday puts them at 0-2, and no club has ever gone from a 0-2 start to the postseason in consecutive years.

Unfortunately, quarterback Joe Burrow is unlikely to participate on Monday after aggravating a calf ailment that kept him out of action for the whole preseason and the majority of training camp. In Sunday’s game against Baltimore, Burrow completed 27 of 41 passes for 222 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

His backup, 27-year-old Jake Browning, has only attempted (and failed) one pass in a regular season game in the NFL. Ja’Marr Chase, a star wide receiver, has only had 70 total yards of offense so far. Both weeks, the Cincinnati ground game has shredded the defense.
