One of the most intriguing NFL teams this year is the Miami Dolphins. In 2023, will they be able to rediscover their early-season form? The Los Angeles Chargers, fresh off one of the worst playoff lead collapses in history, will be their season opener opponent.
The Los Angeles Chargers are set to make strides in 2023 across the board. The Chargers’ defense is a major area for development this season. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are banking on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to avoid any more injuries after he missed five games in 2022, including the postseason. Last year, Miami had a 9-8 record and were eliminated by the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card stage of the playoffs.
The Los Angeles defense ranked 20th in the league that year, giving up an average of 22.6 points and 346.1 yards per game. The loss of Joey Bosa and J.C. Jackson, two of their most important defensive players, to injuries for large chunks of last season was a major factor in the Chargers’ defensive struggles, especially in the fourth quarter and overtime.
The good news for the defense is that with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in place, star quarterback Justin Herbert should be able to fly to new heights and unlock all of his potential, allowing the Chargers to win most of their games this season. Herbert passed for 4,739 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2022; with Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and young rookie Quentin Johnston as receivers, he could improve this year.
The Dolphins’ overall record versus the Chargers stands at 19-17. However, Los Angeles defeated Miami 23-17 in a thrilling matchup in 2022. With a 55.4% chance of sending the Dolphins back to South Florida with a loss, the Los Angeles Chargers will try to even their series record with the Miami Dolphins at 19 wins apiece.
