The 2023 season will kick off with a matchup between the Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders, two clubs that underachieved in 2022. The Raiders have made a move at quarterback, trading away Derek Carr in favor of reuniting with former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett has been replaced by Sean Payton. With no postseason appearance since their Super Bowl 50 victory, the franchise is hoping Payton can restore some consistency. Russell Wilson had a terrible 2022 season, but with a revamped offensive, would he be able to rebound in 2023? That’s the goal for Denver, and the host team Broncos are favorites by the oddsmakers to win.
Now is Russell Wilson’s chance to show that the problem in 2022 wasn’t him but Nathaniel Hackett. A bad start by Wilson in 2023 might lead to Denver considering benching him. Javonte Williams is anticipated to be ready for Week 1 after missing the entire 2022 season due to an ACL rupture. Denver may rely heavily on the running backs in Week 1 without Tim Patrick on injured reserve and Jeudy possibly missing the game. This means both Williams and Samaje Perine will see significant playing time.
In order to return to the postseason, Las Vegas will need to make significant strides after finishing third in the AFC West last season.
With Josh McDaniels at the helm of the Raiders offense, Jimmy G has an opportunity to resurrect his career. While Garoppolo’s WR1 in Davante Adams is among the best in the league, the 2022 Denver defense will be tough to crack. Defensive player of the year candidate Maxx Crosby has recorded 25 solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles, and 11.5 sacks in eight career games versus the Broncos. In both of his games against Denver last year, he had two sacks.
