Game Preview

The Baltimore Ravens not only made the postseason with Tyler Huntley at quarterback and Lamar Jackson playing in only 12 games, but they nearly upset the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati in the Wild Card round thanks to a 99-yard fumble recovery touchdown by Sam Hubbard.

The Ravens fired Greg Roman, their offensive coordinator, and replaced him with pass-first offensive guru Todd Monken after a successful 10-7 season. The 3-13-1 Houston Texans needed a more drastic change, so they hired DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach and drafted CJ Stroud and Will Anderson Jr.

It’s going to look different this year at both locations, making Week 1’s game in Baltimore all the more intriguing.

This offseason, both the Texans and the Ravens made headlines, albeit for very different reasons. For the Texans, the offseason was defined by their draft performance, while for the Ravens it was the signing of quarterback Lamar Jackson to a new contract and their free agency maneuvers.

Houston drafted quarterback C.J. Stroud third overall in 2023, and defensive end Will Anderson Jr. first overall, so fans are eager to see what they can do this year. After two successful years as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, Demeco Ryansis is also making his debut as an NFL head coach.

Stroud was drafted with the second overall pick in the NFL draft and was the second quarterback selected (behind Bryce Young). He had a fantastic career at Ohio State, but in his two years as the starting quarterback, his primary targets were not Marvin Harrison Jr. but rather Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, or Emeka Egbuka. There are now four first-round picks, plus two more in the future. The Texans will need him to help prop up a weak group of wideouts.

Odell Beckham Jr., now 30 years old, has moved to Baltimore to play for Lamar Jackson. We last saw him in the first half of Super Bowl 56. The Ravens’ transition to a pass-first offense led by Lamar would be futile without a return to form from OBJ. The Ravens have strengthened their receiving corps, but they are relying heavily on one player: OBJ.
