With only two wins and six draws in their last 20 games against Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, a tie would be considered a positive result for Newcastle. The Tyneside club needs the psychological advantage of frequently defeating the top sides in the league if it is to shatter the status quo and become a consistent top-six side.
For starters, Newcastle must put an end to Liverpool’s unbeaten streak in head-to-head matches (a feat that seems easier than it is, considering Liverpool’s great winning machine).
The Merseysiders have four points after opening with a draw away at Chelsea and a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. Even though they didn’t finish in the top four last year, there are promising signals that they’ll be right back where they belong this year.
Although the Anfield club has undergone significant changes this summer, they are still expected to challenge for the championship. Getting a win on the road against a rejuvenated Newcastle team would be par for the course and bode well for their title hopes this year.
Even though Liverpool hasn’t lost to Newcastle in any competition since 2015, another win would give them as much confidence as their undefeated start to the domestic season.
