Tennessee Titans Video Picks & Predictions for Today’s Games

Tennessee Titans – Established 1960

The Tennessee Titans started off as the Houston Oilers and were founded in 1960 by Bud Adams. Adams would own the team for 53 years until his death in 2013. The Oilers were one of the charter members of the American Football League and went on to win the first two AFL championships. The Oilers also won four division titles before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

But, the Oilers went from one of the best teams in the AFL to one of the worst in the NFL. It took five years for the Oilers to see a winning season and they finished 1-13 twice during that time. It would take another three years for Houston to make the playoffs for the first time in the NFL after finishing 10-6. Earl Campbell won both the Offensive Player of the Year and the Offensive Rookie of the year award but the Oilers lost in the AC Championship to the Steelers. Campbell would go on to win two more Offensive Player of the Year awards in a row along with an MVP in 1979. Still, they were unable to beat the Steelers when it mattered and lost again to them in the AFC title game.

After 1981, things went south and the Oilers failed to win more than five games in a season over the next five years. Business picked up again in 1987 with Jerry Glanville taking over as coach. Glanville led the Oilers to three straight playoff appearances and helped guide QB Warren Moon to an MVP in 1989. Despite the talent in Houston, the team was never able to make it past the AFC title game until 1999.

At this point, the team moved to Tennessee and rebranded themselves as the Titans. In their very first year in Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher led the team all the way to Super Bowl XXXIV. They ended up losing 23-16 to the Rams, but it was a big step for the franchise in their new city.

Unfortunately, as of 2022, that was the best it got for the Titans. They have yet to make it back to the Super Bowl and were knocked out of the playoffs the last two years in the first round.
