The UFC heads to Austin, Texas for its Fight Night card that will feature top-10 lightweights Beneil Dariush and Arman Tsarukyan facing off on Fight Night 62. Both fighters hope to move up in rankings; whoever comes out victorious could potentially earn themselves a title shot next year.
Dariush suffered an impressive stoppage loss to Charles Oliveira earlier this year, ending his eight-fight winning streak and knocking him from contention somewhat. Still a top contender, Dariush now has the opportunity to rebound against one of Tsarukyan’s tougher challengers and return to form.
Tsarukyan has established himself as one of the top contenders since joining the promotion back in 2019. Although he lost to Islam Makhachev and Mateusz Gamrot in two close battles, Tsarukyan has proven tough throughout every other fight since making his debut.
Fantastic wrestler Beneil Dariush will have a small height and reach edge against Tsarukyan. This will provide Dariush with an advantage while tying up his opponent along the fence and defending takedowns. Whenever he establishes his range, he can also box really well and use a number of techniques to take Tsarukyan down.
Tsarukyan, a Muay Thai black belt, stands out as an aggressive out on the back foot. His hard hits combine well and tend to be punctuated with strong kicks from his lead side, often using body positioning techniques in open-stance fights to create angles for him to exploit. He displays great positional awareness.
Dariush has been competing in mixed martial arts for more than 10 years and his age could catch up with him as he nears 35. Though an excellent grappler who has stuffed most opponents’ takedown attempts successfully, some better grapplers have managed to land hard shots against him and force a submission attempt against him.
Dariush and Tsarukyan are strikingly similar when it comes to key ground metrics, but Tsarukyan has the edge due to his youth and durability on the feet round after round. His youth could allow him to control action on the mat before looking for a finish in later rounds.
