This Saturday night, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Las Vegas’ UFC Apex facility with an event headlined by top bantamweight contenders Song Yadong and Chris Gutierrez – former world champion from Asian regional MMA circuits who come in having won 2 out of their last four fights and currently seventh in UFC.
Song and Gutierrez both see this fight as an opportunity to move up the ranks and earn themselves title shots in the future. Song is looking for a win streak after his most recent win while Gutierrez hopes he can continue to win after having defeated Heili Alatengheili earlier.
When Gutierrez takes on Yadong, he is aiming to secure a successful 2023 campaign as the number fifteen. Pedro Munhoz defeated him in a decision to open his year. With that defeat, Gutierrez’s 8-fight winning streak came to an end. His prior defeat occurred on his UFC debut in November 2018.
As such, this will be an intriguing contest between two well-rounded fighters with notable knockout wins to their names and no intention of grappling. Instead, this seems set to be an exciting standup battle with plenty of punches flying.
Yadong, who has a 9-2-1 record in the Octagon, is presently ranked higher, at No. 7. His only bout of 2023 ended with a TKO of Ricky Simon in the 5th round. Yandong’s victory over Simon let him to bounce back from his September 2022 TKO defeat to Cory Sandhagen. This is Yadong’s 3rd consecutive main event matchup with Gutierrez.
Given that Song and Gutierrez have a combined record of 17-4-2 in the UFC and neither is currently in the championship conversation, this is just another illustration of how broad and difficult the 135-pound weight class is right now, and has been for a while. Although a strong showing from either of them now won’t guarantee that, it will get them further to that place as we approach what promises to be an exciting 2024.
