Picks & Predictions: Raul Rosas Jr. vs Terrence Mitchell 9/16/2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Taking on Terrence is Raul Rosas Jr. This weekend’s Noche UFC program at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas features a three-round bantamweight bout between Mitchell and an opponent to be determined. Rosas, a sensation, will have to perform well against Mitchell, a physically imposing opponent, if he wants to bounce back from an upset loss in his previous match.

The 18-year-old grappler Raul Rosas looked out of his depth against Christian Rodriguez at UFC 288, derailing the hype train just as it was about to leave the station. When Rodriguez stopped his grappling and out hit him 29-2 in the decision loss, the young upstart panicked and had no backup plan. Mitchell is the guy for the job as Rosas goes back to the drawing board.

Seven years ago on The Ultimate Fighter, Mitchell suffered a devastating loss at the hands of Kai Kara-France. At UFC 290, Cameron Saaiman knocked him out in the first round. Between now and then, Mitchell mainly fought in Alaska, where he did not fare well.

For the time being, Rosas’s one-dimensional grappling should be enough to give him the upper hand. Mitchell is taller and can reach further than Rosas, but I don’t think he makes good use of those advantages.

Rosas could try to show that he has improved as a striker since their last bout, but I doubt it will come to that. As soon as Rosas draws near, Mitchell won’t be able to put up much of a fight.

Rosas lost his last bout despite being a heavy favorite, but critics have maintained that Rodriguez has been disregarded the entire time. Mitchell, however, lacks the necessary skills to compete at such a high level.

With a convincing victory during Mexican Independence Day weekend, the UFC can restore Rosas’ marketability and gradually advance him to the point where he can complete his skill set.
