Amanda Ribas Analysis: She is a strong and quick fighter
Ribas (13-4) has experience switching up weight classes. One of the very few fighters ranked by the UFC in 2 divisions, she is placed seventh in the women’s strawweight category and eighth in the flyweight division. It is a good thing that Ribas, weighing 115 pounds, has more experience than her opponent. When facing her first former champion in a UFC big event, she will seek every advantage possible. After seven battles, Ribas has alternated between victories and defeats; however, Saturday presents an opportunity to change this pattern. While Ribas is as lethal when moving quickly, Namajunas’ timing and accuracy are too good for her defense. To pin Namajunas down, she must get closer and utilize her strength advantage.
Namajunas Analysis: She’ll be looking to come back
In her flyweight debut versus Manon Fiorot in Paris last autumn, Namajunas (12-6) was unsuccessful. Given that Namajunas was fresh off a split decision defeat to Carla Esparza for the UFC women’s strawweight title, it was an unexpected jump up. Although both fighters gave terrible performances, Namajunas remained very much at the top of the hierarchy. Her dominance over Zhang Weili, the current champion, in back-to-back victories has kept her at the top of the 115-pound weight class. Nonetheless, it appears that she is moving forward at flyweight. Although Namajunas acknowledges she hurried through the Fiorot, she feels her framework and frame are now more in sync. This is going to be an entertaining match, and Namajunas will be happy that Ribas, unlike Fiorot, is around the same size.
