At UFC 295 Matt Frevola hopes to continue his winning ways against Benoit Saint-Denis in a Lightweight fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Saint-Denis hails from France’s army but brings an all-action style into MMA with all his wins coming within two rounds.
Saint-Denis holds an edge when it comes to grappling. By keeping Frevola at distance with his reach advantage and length advantage, Saint-Denis will have more opportunity for clean strikes before Frevola launches any powerful counterstrikes of his own.
The American has one-punch knockout potential, but has also been vulnerable to powerful left hooks that could end the fight quickly. He must avoid taking unnecessary risks and box more effectively against Saint-Denis’s sharp boxing style and firm chin.
Frevola has proven himself the more adept grappler of the two, yet has rarely had to rely on his wrestling in the UFC. He’s only been taken down once against an opponent considered one of the top-10 Lightweight contenders, against one considered among his top competitors for that weight class. If Frevola wants to become a successful welterweight fighter, however, his ground defense must improve significantly.
Saint-Denis is an impressive striker just beginning to show his true potential in the mixed martial arts arena. He averages more than five significant strikes per minute in the UFC and his accuracy stands at 52%. Additionally, Saint-Denis boasts an impressive 40% submission win rate while being capable of taking down 80% of opponents with his formidable grappling game.
Frevola should still be considered the favorite in this fight despite his unranked status, having won three consecutive fights by first-round knockout in the UFC, all by first round KOs. He initially had a tough start to his career but has found success since; most notably by beating Drew Dober at their previous meeting.
Saint-Denis has shown his ability to handle gifted strikers, so it shouldn’t pose much trouble when up against Frevola. Frevola’s chin should absorb some of Saint-Denis’ punches while his striking defense remains solid; nonetheless, Saint-Denis could eventually find an opening and finish this fight off with one or two powerful strikes.
