Picks & Analysis: Shakur Stevenson vs Edwin De Los Santos 11-16-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Shakur Stevenson will make an exciting transition as an undisputed two-division world champion when he challenges Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight title on November 16th in Las Vegas during Formula 1 Grand Prix Week and Top Rank Boxing doubleheader featuring Emanuel Navarrete defending his super featherweight belt against Robson Conceicao as co-main event.

Stevenson (20-0, 10 KOs) will likely be an overwhelming favorite in this fight; however, several factors could work against him. Most significantly is his non-entertaining fighting style, while one of the premier defensive fighters in combat sports today, his style can become tiresome against weak opposition and eventually lose its charm.

Stevenson may be an exceptional boxer, but he lacks power punching ability and likely won’t become a three-division world champion without adding more punches to his arsenal. To do that, Stevenson must stop fighting safely and risk getting knocked out more often to make fights more interesting for fans – otherwise they may prefer another lightweight fighter like Raymond Muratalla who have more forceful punches with fan-pleasing styles.

De Los Santos (16-1, 14 KOs) hailing from the Dominican Republic is on a three-fight win streak and looking to add his legacy to it. While his record speaks for itself, De Los Santos recently experienced defeat due to Luis Acosta stopping his fight early.

Stevenson will face a critical test against De Los Santosas an undefeated world champion still striving to cement himself as an elite force at lightweight. Unable to attract undisputed champion Devin Haney into a fight, Stevenson is moving up in weight class and facing another top contender, De Los Santos.

De Los Santos may be one of the top contenders, but he does have his flaws. One is his tendency to look outside the corner during fights which could extend them considerably and two, his large right hands frequently catch opponents unaware and have yet to learn how to adjust against bigger adversaries.

Overall, this fight promises to be close and thrilling. While Stevenson’s ability to adapt his style for success in the lighter division remains unknown, this must-see bout for all boxing fans is a must.
