In front of a home audience in Detroit, Michigan, Alycia Baumgardner will be defending her undisputed super featherweight title over Christina Linardatou on Saturday July 15.
Baumgardner won a 2014 National Golden Gloves silver medal and made her professional boxing debut in 2017. She won her first eight fights before falling to Linardatou for what remains her only loss on record; since then, Baumgardner has rebounded with another eight victories, often including impressive finishes such as knocking out Edith Soledad Matthysse and Terri Harper before outboxing Mikaela Mayer to become undefeated female boxer in the 130-pound division.
Baumgardner faced Linardatou in 2018 in a back-and-forth fight that concluded in an intense exchange. Both women exchanged punches inside and fought on the outside before Linardatou eventually won with her relentless pressure that overwhelmed “The Bomber.” Linardatou caused problems for Baumgardner early in rounds as she continually pushed forward while throwing high volumes of power shots at Baumgardner.
Baumgardner has made enough strides since their initial battle to be seen as a clear favorite in this rematch. Linardatou has experienced decline due to her inactivity and has seen Baumgardner become more efficient as she possesses speed and accuracy that are difficult for opponents to deal with, plus an improved defensive system since their first clash. She’s become an effective counter puncher as well.
Baumgardner averages 20.9 jabs per round – the highest average among active top women’s boxers – which allows her to pick off opponents with her jabs and force them into bad spots where she can land heavy power shots. Linardatou can still use her forward pressure, yet has looked fatigued down the stretch in recent fights against Mikaela Mayer and Elhem Mekhaled.
Two fighters meet again for a highly anticipated rematch in an intense contest that could determine who becomes world undisputed champion at 130 pounds. The bout will take place inside Detroit’s Masonic Temple on Saturday July 15.
