Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez of Mexico and Joe Smith Jr are set to square off again on October 7th at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in what promises to be one of the year’s most captivating cruiserweight fights. Both fighters are former world champions who will vie for another shot at glory with one winner having an indirect shot at world crown glory.
Gilberto Ramirez recently suffered a devastating loss against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in a devastating mismatch, being too slow and limited in skill to match up against Russia’s machine. To try and recover from that setback he will face Joe Smith Jr a former WBO light heavyweight champion in their next fight.
Ramirez is an incredible southpaw who boasts powerful punching ability and is known to be an extremely durable and aggressive fighter. However, his career was severely compromised last year when he missed weight for his fight with Gabriel Rosado on a Golden Boy card without him and adversely affected other fights on that same card.
After his embarrassing misstep, Ramirez decided to move up in weight – an astute decision considering the cruiserweight division is currently underweight, and moving up will help increase activity rates while giving him another opportunity at winning again.
Joe Smith Jr is a lean and rugged light heavyweight who possesses tremendous natural talent. At 33, he’s an adept puncher with fast hands who uses them effectively against opponents from the outside, using a formidable jab as well. However, lack of protection has proved costly in past matches.
Smith is another limited technician but boasts immense raw power. He once held the WBO light heavyweight title before it was taken away by Artur Beterbiev via split decision; as a result he will look to return with a victory against Ramirez in an important contest.
Smith will likely be smaller than Ramirez, but has the strength and stamina to outwork, outpunch, and outlast his Mexican opponent. Smith may use his size advantage to bully Ramirez into throwing some big shots while using superior footwork and agility to avoid any troublesome exchanges. Smith has earned himself a reputation for being a smart and calculating boxer, which will certainly come in handy against Ramirez during their fight.
