Joe Cordina will make his inaugural defense of his world super-featherweight title this Saturday night in Monte Carlo against Edward Vazquez. The Welshman recently regained it through a split decision victory against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov and should look ahead to several key unification fights this year. Although Vazquez boasts an impressive 15-1 record, his opponent poses a much tougher test due to being an outsider coming in from nowhere when pitted against Cordina.
Cordina will have an obvious edge in this fight as he stands much taller and boasts a 56% TKO/KO percentage finish rate over Vazquez, who has only been fighting professionally for nine years.
Vazquez, on the other hand, is an up-and-coming young fighter who has won 15 out of his 16 professional fights so far in his professional career. An American with an aggressive come-forward fighting style and an ability to land big punches quickly. Additionally, this challenger is adept at moving forward quickly while dodging shots successfully.
Cordina and Vazquez’s approach will be pivotal in deciding their outcome in this fight. If Cordina attempts to attack aggressively and overwhelm his opponent, he could find himself in serious difficulty against Vazquez’s boxing IQ and skill. Cordina could easily pick off Vazquez’s movements before counterpunching back with counterpunches that could turn things around quickly.
Vazquez plans on taking the fight directly to Cordina and looking to exert his own force. He has proven his durability thus far in his professional career; never having been stopped during any bout. It is expected of him to use pressure tactics on Cordina that could result in him moving backwards; something which plays to Cordina’s strengths and could ultimately result in a stoppage win for the champion.
This will be an exciting bout, with Vazquez possessing an effective fighting style but lacking in power and size to threaten his opponent, yet possessing enough counterpunching capabilities to be dangerous against a counter puncher like Leinders. However, should Vazquez come out too aggressively early then they may find themselves vulnerable against an opponent who uses counterpunching like clockwork; otherwise the champ should use his superior boxing IQ for success.
