Fight Preview
On Saturday night, Oleksandr Usyk will defend his three titles against Daniel Dubois, marking the first time a world heavyweight title will be on the line since 2023. Although many in the boxing community were hoping for a rematch between Usyk and Fury, Fury has instead agreed to face UFC legend Francis Ngannou in October.
Dubois has benefited from being first in line for a number of mandatory requirements that are either imminent or imminently overdue. Fury and Usyk’s strategy required them to fight at the beginning of December, therefore when Fury chose to face Dereck Chisora for a third time, the argument was made that Chisora was the best alternative for a clash at that time.
Their promoters clashed over whether or not bids were made and the value of each man in the fight, despite the fact that the two fighters had appeared to be close to agreeing to terms. It became clear that Saudi Arabia would not be able to host their fight until the end of the year, even after Usyk promised to take a modest 30% split to push a deal over the line.
It’s unclear if Usyk will face Fury, but Queensberry Promotions was aware that Dubois, another fighter they represent, was scheduled to face an opponent in place of the WBC champion. Some have said that the timing is bad for the British fighter to face an opponent of Usyk’s caliber. After taking the WBA regular title from Trevor Bryan, Dubois was knocked down three times by an underdog opponent named Kevin Lerena in the first defense of his title at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Dubois came up from the floor to stop Lerena at the conclusion of the third round, but he suffered a knee injury in the early going of the battle and will be out for a while. It is assumed that the 25-year-old is fully recovered if he has agreed to fight on this date, but he is entering uncharted territory against a fighter with Usyk’s skill set, where agility and quickness will be crucial.
