Fight Preview
Kazuto Ioka will face Venezuelan Josber Perez in an all-out battle at Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo on Sunday, December 31. Ioka holds four division major title, he knocked out Aston Palicte to win WBO crown and becoming first Japanese fighter ever to hold world titles at three weight classes simultaneously. 34-year-old Ioka will make his 12th New Year’s Eve show as major titleholder since 2011.
Ioka was forced to make the show without an official mandatory challenger, so his camp searched for an available ranked contender and settled on Perez as their number one option. A Venezuelan power puncher who won his WBA Latino flyweight belt, Perez went unbeaten over six fights until suffering losses against Rober Barrera and Artem Dalakian during his pursuit of unification of WBA/WBO titles pushed him further down in rankings.
Perez was able to overcome his loss to Dalakian by winning his next two fights. The Venezuelan is known for being a strong counterpuncher who can catch opponents off-guard with powerful power counters; furthermore, his ability to throw shots from unusual angles and distances makes him an extremely dangerous opponent.
Perez presents Ioka with an extremely dangerous challenger, with both speed and power at his disposal. However, the former champion should prove more dominant, taking advantage of unorthodox angles to gain an upper hand and score wins against Perez.
Ioka’s greatest challenge will be remaining composed and using his boxing acumen to outwit Perez’s aggressiveness, although the champion is ready to take on this fight. Thanks to an exceptional right hand from Ioka he should be able to neutralize any threat Perez may pose by power countering with speed attacks while using his speed advantage to gain the upper hand and force this fight into later rounds with relative ease and defend his title with relative ease.
