Oscar Collazo will defend his WBO minimumweight championship on Saturday at Phoenix’s Footprint Center, facing Nicaraguan Reyneris Gutierrez. Oscar De La Hoya‘s Golden Boy Promotions will promote both bouts; Munguia-Ryder being promoted as the main event.
Gutierrez presents an interesting challenge and should serve as a strong opponent to test Collazo. He has proven his worth against numerous formidable opponents throughout his career.
Collazo made his professional debut in 2020 following an outstanding seven-year amateur career that yielded five national championships and a bronze medal at the 2017 Pan American Games. Since making his pro debut, this southpaw from Newark, New Jersey remains unbeaten with eight victories and six knockouts; most recently he forced Melvin Jerusalem out of their fight after round seven to capture the WBO world strawweight title.
Collazo expresses gratitude to Cotto for his mentorship and for being elevated by him. Collazo acknowledges the brotherhood amongst all Puerto Rican world champions, both past and present, and expresses his humility at being compared to such greats. He also aims to forge his own route to fame.
Gutierrez is an extremely tall Nicaraguan boxer with long arms and great reach in his division. A solid puncher with plenty of power, he has won all but one fight inside four rounds with three of those victories being via stoppage; his only loss coming against Alex Winwood, who is a worthy challenger to Collazo.
The bout will offer both fighters an opportunity to gain extra ring experience before entering into the bustling summer boxing season. Its winner should likely find himself or herself among the top ten by month’s end and may soon face another high-profile opponent. Collazo will soon face Gutierrez in an epic showdown, the latter is his most exciting prospect since Juan Manuel Mora and is hoping to become an international star much like Marco Antonio Barrera has done.
