Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) will face John Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) in Phoenix in an encounter aimed at unification in super middleweight boxing. Munguia recently claimed one of his signature wins – an emphatic unanimous decision victory against Sergiy Derevyanchenko back in June, and hopes to add Ryder as another major opponent before seeking out Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez later this year.
Munguia was long considered one of the shining lights from Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy stable, yet his career seemed stagnant prior to defeating Ukrainian. That victory gave Munguia fresh momentum heading into Saturday’s bout against Ryder.
Ryder is a two-time world title challenger who was recently defeated by Canelo Alvarez via unanimous 12 round decision. However, Ryder is known for his resilience, making him a tough test for Munguia early. Ryder’s best chance to stop Munguia early will come by connecting heavy blows against his corner of Munguia’s pocket, something which may happen here if Ryder can catch Munguia with some heavy shots from behind in round one.
Munguia will try to force a good fight and look to make an immediate statement from the opening bell. An orthodox fighter capable of quick finishes, Munguia could use his height, reach, and speed advantage against Ryder as one of only a handful of options available to Canelo for 2024 fights, so an emphatic knockout victory over Ryder would ensure his name remains in discussion for potential rematches in future bouts with Canelo.
Munguia, trained by Freddie Roach, has fought around the globe as he progresses toward facing Canelo. Ryder, managed by Erik Morales, has fought across three countries including the United States, UK and Italy during his career, making this fight both highly rated and an exciting spectacle.
