Preview & Analysis: Jonas vs Mayer 01-20-2024

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Mikaela Mayer and Natasha Jonas will put their world titles at stake when they meet for a showdown in Liverpool this Saturday, January 20.

Jonas, who became two-weight world champion with her stoppage win over Kandi Wyatt in July, will attempt her first defense of the IBF welterweight championship. Jonas is an aggressive fighter who prefers working hard for all ten rounds allowed under women’s boxing regulations; additionally she boasts strong punching power as evidenced by seven of her eight victories, including Wyatt.

Mayer is a former unified junior lightweight champion who recently made the transition to welterweight to take on Jonas. At 33, Mayer boasts excellent conditioning and handspeed; she lost to Alycia Baumgardner during her last fight but has gone undefeated in two fights since and poses a formidable challenge to Jonas’ title.

Both fighters appeared in good health as they took to the scale for weigh-in ahead of their fights. Jonas came in at 10st 6lb while Mayer came just five ounces over. Jonas will be defending her title before her home crowd in Toxteth and was clearly encouraged by their vocal support at weigh-in.

Jonas holds two world championships and will attempt to capture her third in succession when she takes on Mayer on January 20. It is an important fight for both fighters and could have far-reaching ramifications on women’s boxing’s future.

Jonas and Mayer are two aggressive fighters who possess very different styles. Mayer prefers a patient approach while Jonas opts to slowly pick off opponents before unleashing her power. As such, this fight could go the distance – Jonas may win via stoppage but Mayer could push into late rounds and win via split decision instead. Whoever emerges victorious should gain some ground in pound-for-pound rankings and should prove exciting viewing for fans of female boxing.
