Preview & Analysis: Ortiz Jr. vs Lawson 01-05-2024

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Vergil Ortiz Jr will return to action after 17 months out due to a recurring bout with rhabdomyolysis on January 6 at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas for an action-packed super welterweight fight against Fredrick Lawson. Lawson and Ortiz will engage in a 12-round fight on January 6th.

Unbeaten boxer Juan Ortiz has made the leap up a weight class for this fight and hopes to demonstrate his power can carry over into a higher division. An emerging talent at Golden Boy Promotions, Ortiz could soon receive his shot at world title glory.

He first made an impression in 2021 with two impressive stoppage victories against Maurice Hooker and Egidijus Kavaliauskas, before adding more victories to his resume last year by successfully retaining his WBO International welterweight title via a ninth-round stoppage against Michael McKinson.

Ortiz may have made his mark as a puncher, but his skillset is much deeper and should enable him to dominate any new opponent he faces. One of the world’s deadliest boxers, Ortiz will look to shake off any residual ring rust and show that he still belongs in this fight.

Fredrick Lawson has long been one of the top fighters at welterweight – in Chicago-based Ghanaian has won 30 out of 33 fights so far, losing only to Collinson Korley in 2012. Since then he has won his two subsequent bouts. Lawson’s final bout occurred in April, when he defeated Estevan Villalobos via unanimous decision.

Lawson has earned several knockout victories throughout his career, though he does not possess Ortiz’s power of punching out opponents. His biggest win to date came against Estevan Villalobos this April; now, Lawson hopes to add yet another knockout win with this bout. Lawson’s height advantage over Ortiz Jr. is one inch. Both fighters have the same reach in spite of this.
