Preview & Picks: Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr. 09-02-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

In a rematch that has been much anticipated, Manchester will once again play home to Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. A rematch of a grudge bout from earlier this year is on the horizon, and with the stakes stronger than ever, fans can’t get enough.

Their first fight, also in Manchester, stunned spectators when Smith won in the fourth round. Their rematch, set for the AO Arena, has been postponed twice already owing to an injury suffered by the 35-year-old Liverpudlian.

The stakes of this rematch go much beyond those of the actual fight. When there’s bad blood between combatants, the stakes go up and everything the combatants do has more meaning.

Chris Eubank Jr. capitulated under the scrutiny of the spotlight again in January, when he was knocked out in four rounds by Liam Smith. Smith, a former junior middleweight champion, knocked Eubank down with the first punch he landed and eventually ended the fight. For Smith, who is known more for his courageous style than his punching strength, this was a career-best victory.

Former champion Smith’s experience against stronger opponents was crucial to his victory. If his opponents are unable to contain him in the arena, he will be an absolute terror. Smith is a dogged stalker who displays the patience and timing necessary to compete with pace demons like Eubank.

Many have wondered if Eubank’s recent collapse against another competitor signals the end of the road for the second-generation star. It came as a surprise to everyone that the 33-year-old lost so decisively and so quickly in the first battle, despite having every advantage. Late in training camp, Eubank decided to replace Roy Jones Jr. with new trainer Brian “Bomac” McIntyre in an effort to balance the score.

Even if the first bout between these two was decided, Eubank still has an opportunity to win. He has bigger hands and more natural size than Smith, and he has had brief periods of success at both 160 and 168 pounds. If he loses against Smith, it will be disastrous for his career as an athlete, so he had better be prepared to bring his A-game.
