Game Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres are in need of wins as they vie for playoff berths, meeting tonight for the second game of their three-game series matchup at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. While the Pirates currently sit fourth in NL Central while the Padres, also in 4th place but in the NL West, must win to have any chance at making the postseason, this contest will also serve as an important test for both clubs.
Nick Gonzales was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 7th pick overall in the 2020 draft, partially due to the power he can produce. This strength is finally being demonstrated in the MLB over 3 years later. Gonzales started his first major league hit with a single in the 2nd inning and later launched a 442-foot home run to center field as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated San Diego 9-4 on Tuesday.
The Padres had high hopes that Yu Darvish could help their team rebound from an emotionally draining loss to the Nationals with his presence on the mound, however due to illness he had to withdraw at short notice and was replaced by Reiss Knehr who promptly gave up two homers during his first inning of work.
That was all it would take for the Pirates to seize an early advantage, scoring four in the second and three more in the third to put away any chance for a comeback by the Padres who scored only once more for an eventual 9-4 loss.

After another subpar performance by the Padres, their fans are growing increasingly frustrated. Some fans are even calling for relocation of the team to Oakland.
The Padres’ Blake Snell, who has a record of 4-6 and a 3.22 ERA, will start. Mitch Keller, who has a 8-3 record, a 3.45 ERA, will come up against them for the Pirates. Snell’s latest start resulted in a 10-0 victory over San Francisco since he only allowed 3 hits and no runs in 6 innings of work while striking out 11 batters. On the other hand, in his most recent outing, Keller went 7 innings while allowing 5 hits and 1 run, but the club fell to Miami 6-4. If they are to prevail in this match, they will require him to have another strong opening.
