Today the St. Louis Cardinals will try to secure the lead over the New York Mets in the four-game series after managing to score a very close victory on their books yesterday. Although New York took the first win of the series, they didn’t perform as expected during Tuesday’s game. The Cardinals are on a much more solid form as of recently when compared to the Mets, but they are overall looking better in the last 10.
The New York Mets will send out the right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer to open up the game. Scherzer is 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 11.3 K/9 across 44 IP over 7 starts, which are some impressive numbers, although not the best of his entire career. It’s safe to say that the Mets will have an edge on the pitching department for this match, Scherzer hasn’t allowed an ER over 21 IP with a 32/2 K/BB rate in 3 starts vs. the Cardinals since the beginning of last season.
On the other hand, the Cardinals will use Jordan Hicks as their starting pitcher, which puts them at a disadvantage early on in the game. His last start resulted in a loss versus the San Francisco Giants where he pitched 5 innings and gave 3 earned runs. We saw him pitch against the Mets earlier this season and although he didn’t look that bad, he gave away 2 runs over the 2 innings he pitched in, and if we consider that the Mets are 20-7 overall versus righty starters, the Cardinals might be in a tough position from the very start.
If the Cardinals manage to score a win today, it will be a big surprise for everyone. They did come up on top yesterday, but it wasn’t in a very dominating performance at all as Steven Matz gave up a couple more runs than they could’ve hoped for. We all know what Max Scherzer is capable of, that’s why this game is going to be for the Mets to lose.
