The NCAAF bowl season is here, and now it’s time to check out the Bahamas Bowl encounter between the Miami RedHawks and the UAB Blazers. Miami needed to win its last two regular season matches to become bowl eligible, and just managed to do it against Ball State in a 1-point decision to clinch the last victory.
The RedHawks are heading into this one playing well, winning three out of their last four matches, including a clutch performance over Ball State 18-17. They might not have a high-powered attack available, but they’re good enough for around 200 passing yards per game without a high amount of big mistakes, with just one interception in the last six games.
They ended up losing to Buffalo when the rushing attack rocked, but that’s been it for being on the wrong side of things when they’re powering down. Led by quarterback Aveon Smith and a rotation of young talent, Miami is currently 5-1 when running for 120 yards or more and 1-5 when not.
Now looking at the other side, UAB definitely has the ability to crank up the scoreboard fast and turn the lights out. It might be somewhat inconsistent, but they were able to keep up in the 44-38 defeat to UTSA while hanging up 41 on North Texas, and overall improved over the final month when they were looking for an opportunity to go on a run to get bowl eligible.
Sure, Miami can run, but UAB has the superstar of the moment in the league’s leading rusher, DeWayne McBride. On average, he posted 155 yards per game, ran for 1,713 yards even though he missed the opener and got stuffed by LSU. Some might say that UAB hasn’t been the squad everyone thought it could be, but it’s still a team full of veteran talent and the offensive line should look good.
