December 16 at Independence Stadium, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the California Golden Bears will play in the Independence Bowl.
After playing 12 matches on a 3-game winning streak to close off the regular season with a split, the Golden Bears qualified for the postseason. In the season finale, the California offense was outstanding, scoring 33 points on 302 yards of total offense. The Golden Bears’ defense was excellent throughout the game, even though they gave up 379 yards and only 7 scores after forcing four turnovers. Throughout the contest, Fernando Mendoza threw 19 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. On 31 carries, Jaydn Ott and Justin Williams-Thomas totaled for 127 yards and the standout player for California was Jeremiah Hunter, who caught eight passes for 101 yards and a pair of scores. This unit’s rushing defense was a major contributing factor to its inability to hold up against strong opposition. That doesn’t bode well for the Bears, who will now play the Red Raiders, who have a strong offensive line with Tahj Brooks rushing behind it.
Texas Tech’s 2023 regular season ended with six victories out of 12 games played, after an awful 50-point defeat to Texas in their final game of the season. Texas Tech’s offense was never able to get going, accumulating just 198 yards to score 7 points in spite of 3 turnovers. The Red Raiders’ defense gave up 57 points on 528 yards overall, including 302 on the ground, in their weakest game of the season. The Texas Tech offense has been led by Behren Morton this season, who has completed 155 passes for just under 1500 yards and twelve touchdowns. The team’s most potent weapon, running back Tahj Brooks, has 268 carries for 1443 yards and 9 touchdowns, so they’ll definitely use him a lot.
