Jerry Richardson Stadium will host the Famous Toastery Bowl on December 18 between the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the Old Dominion Monarchs.
After losing their first ten games of the season to Ohio State, Troy, Jacksonville State, Liberty, and New Mexico State, the Hilltoppers achieved a .500 run average. However, they have since won a run of games. This season, Western Kentucky has averaged 29.8 points per game on 48 touchdowns, with 33 of those touchdowns (along with 12 interceptions) coming from the air. The Hilltoppers easily won 41-28 against Florida International in their most recent game, jumping out to a commanding 34-7 advantage at the half. Markese Stepp topped the rush with 32 yards on 7 carries, while Austin Reed completed 280 yards of passing for 4 touchdowns and with 6 catches, Malachi Corley contributed 52 yards and a touchdown. With 110 yards per game, the Hilltoppers’ running offense is ranked 116th in the FBS.
While the Monarchs defeated Louisiana, Texas A&M-Commerce, Southern Miss, and Appalachian State, they only went 4-6 through their first ten games. Additionally, Old Dominion has prevailed in a run of games. This season, the Monarchs have scored a meager 22.9 points per game on average while throwing for 19 scores and 10 interceptions.
In their most recent game, Old Dominion narrowly defeated Georgia State to earn bowl eligibility. The Monarchs rallied from a 21-0 halftime hole to win 25-24 in a thrilling second half. Grant Wilson completed his 208 yards of passing with one touchdown and 1 interception, while Raymello Murphy gained 96 yards and a touchdown on 4 receptions. All-American linebacker Jason Henderson will not participate in the game, according to Monarchs coach Ricky Rahne. Henderson seemed to have suffered a leg injury during ODU’s regular season finale versus Georgia State.
