Georgia Team Preview

Winning the national championship three years in a row is no easy feat. However, Georgia is certain to do so in 2023. Even though quarterback Stetson Bennett and key defensive players Jalen Carter, Kelee Ringo, and Christopher Smith won’t be able to play this season for Coach Kirby Smart’s team, the next generation of stars is ready to emerge in Athens.

After the spring games, QB replacement candidate Carson Beck emerged as the frontrunner to replace Bennett, while transfers Rara Thomas and Dominic Lovett joined a receiving corps that already boasted the best tight end in the country in Brock Bowers. New people are required at every tier of defense. However, in ’23, there is minimal concern over this unit.

Stetson Bennett IV’s time at the helm of the Georgia Bulldogs is over, and he left an impressive legacy. Successfully defending a national crown will achieve that. The Georgia Bulldogs had their first legitimate quarterback competition since Kirby Smart’s first year as head coach in 2016. Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff have been feuding all spring, and it looks like it will carry over into the fall, possibly all the way through the season.

You read that right; 2022 was a year dedicated to strengthening the defense. It’s clear why, considering that production will get back up in 2023. Zion Logue, Nazir Stackhouse, Tramel Walthour, and Warren Brinson are hardened veterans who consistently lead the charge. Mykel Williams, who missed most of the spring with minor foot surgery, is the best of the bunch, but younger players like Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins are expected to make significant contributions.

Georgia is here to stay. Defending champions are just as talented as they were in winning the previous two seasons. That’s what happens when you keep piling up strong recruiting classes.

The quarterback competition will determine whether or not the Bulldogs can win three consecutive championships. The staff’s faith in the players hasn’t wavered despite the players’ lack of experience. Georgia’s big-play offense and manageable schedule should be complemented by a strong defensive unit.
