Colorado Team Preview

When it comes to college football in 2023, Colorado is undeniably one of the more intriguing teams to follow. Deion Sanders, the team’s new head coach, has made sweeping changes to the roster in just one summer, acquiring star players including receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, running back Alton McCaskill IV, and defensive lineman Derrick McLendon II.

What role will the newcomers and changes make in Boulder this year? A better roster and coaching staff may not be enough to overcome the schedule’s challenges and produce noticeable results in the victory column.

The last two years, Colorado’s offense has been one of the worst in the nation, largely because of the play of their quarterback. For the past two years at Jackson State, quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been among the best in the FCS.

Sanders will be the starting quarterback for the high-octane offense that Lewis developed while he was head coach at Kent State. Sanders and Lewis became fast friends after they both decided to spend the winter in Boulder.

The defense was even worse than the offense a year before, allowing 44.5 points per game and ranked last in the country. But under Charles Kelly’s leadership, this group has taken a whole new direction. Kelly’s career has seen both triumph and tragedy, but nowhere more so than at Alabama.

Safety Even though Trevor Woods is the best returning player, the other rookies need to step up. The Buffs’ defense could see significant improvements with the additions of players like defensive tackle Shane Cokes, edge rushers Jordan Domineck and Jeremiah Brown, linebacker LaVonta Bentley, and safeties Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig and Myles Slusher.

The hiring of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders as head coach revitalized the team’s efforts. Fans were so excited that ticket and merchandise sales broke records, and it was easy to forget that the club had gone 1-11 only a year prior.

Sanders and his coaching staff have a significant hurdle in trying to quickly produce a winning record with a significantly altered roster. However, if Shedeur Sanders fulfills his promise and the defense clicks, Colorado may be eligible for a bowl game for the third time in the last 15 years.
