Lubbock is ecstatic after witnessing coach Joey McGuire’s first season with an 8-5 record and winning their last four games. Is Texas Tech capable of springing a Big 12 upset this year? The Red Raiders have 14 returning starters and should be able to challenge for the conference championship this year. The offense is led by quarterback Tyler Shough. There is enough continuity and depth returning on defense to hope for improvement in ’23.
After a breakthrough year in 2022, offensive coordinator Zach Kittley should see a meteoric rise in production the following year. The Red Raiders finished last season with the second-best offense in the Big 12 conference. Their 34.2 point per game average put them in fourth place in the Big 12 in that category as well.
You can count on Tech to go for it on all four downs when they have the ball. The Red Raiders attempted the most fourth downs of any FBS team, and their 33 successes ranked them 16th in the league. The Red Raiders have a lot to be excited about offensively, as fifth-year senior Tyler Shough is expected to start as quarterback in the season opener.
In 2023, how would you characterize Tech’s defensive strategy? Experience. The Red Raiders bring back six starters and numerous other key contributors from the 2022 season. The Red Raiders had the greatest red zone defense in the Big 12 and the ninth-best in all of FBS last year. For a system that has been criticized for its weak protections, these are huge improvements.
Fifth-year seniors Jaylon Hutchings and Tony Bradford Jr. will ensure the defensive line’s continued success. The duo recorded 82 tackles and seven sacks last season. The team’s ability to replace edge rusher Tyree Wilson’s production is a major issue after his selection as a first-round choice in the NFL Draft.
There is a palpable sense of hope in Lubbock. Texas Tech’s football program will be put to the test in 2023 under second-year head coach Joey McGuire. McGuire led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 record in his first season.
