Picks & Predictions: LSU vs Mississippi State 9/16/2023

Game Preview

After their season-opening loss to Florida State, LSU didn’t have much of a break. The game against Grambling was the next best thing, though. LSU won by a score of 72-10. However, the AP voters were unimpressed as LSU maintained its No. 14 ranking. Bettors, though, were apparently impressed.

The Tigers got the job done against Grambling after opening with a loss to Florida State. After letting Grambling put together two 80-yard drives, the LSU defense finally found its footing. The Tigers were able to rotate in a number of quarterbacks, led by Jayden Daniels, who all got valuable game time.

If LSU has a weakness, it’s probably on defense. Grambling gained only 320 yards on the Tigers, while Florida State gained 494. Still, it’s understandable that LSU got off to a slow start versus Grambling. Both games this season went over the total, but the Tigers were able to recover from an early deficit and cover the 56.5-point spread.

The Bulldogs haven’t exactly looked terrible so far. Conversely, Mississippi State hasn’t played anyone of note either. When compared to Arizona, a team from the weaker Pac-12 Conference, Southeastern Louisiana is an FCS squad. The Bulldogs have one of the easier schedules in the early going of SEC teams in NCAAF, and it has paid off with two wins so far.

However, LSU will present a much more formidable challenge on defense and offense. In their first two games, the Bulldogs haven’t faced a quarterback of Daniels’ caliber. The Bulldogs will experience a significantly faster tempo of play from the LSU defense than they have thus far this season.

The LSU Tigers’ preseason strategy included relying heavily on Daniels. There’s no need to put a halt to that right now. Even though he didn’t play particularly well, he still managed to account for more than 400 total yards in the game versus Florida State.

It’s not surprising that Mississippi State outgained Southeast Louisiana 522 to 208. Against the Bulldogs, Arizona surprised with a yardage lead of 433 to 307. Arizona would have won the game if not for the Wildcats’ five turnovers. That’s not encouraging for Mississippi State as they prepare to face one of the best teams in the nation.
