Saturday’s November 18th college football game between the Sam Houston State Bearkats (2-8) and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (5-5) will take place at Houchens Industries-LT Smith Stadium.
Sam Houston State defeated Louisiana Tech 42–27 last Saturday to move to 2–8 overall and 1–5 in Conference-USA play. In the fourth quarter, Kavian Gaither scored a pick-six for the Bearkats, while Sam Houston State recorded four touchdowns on the ground. It’s been a difficult season for the Bearkats. Sam Houston State scored 19 touchdowns and averaged 16.9 points per game this season, winning only 1 of their first 9 games. The positive aspect is that there were 9 interceptions, 13 touchdowns, and 214.7 yards per game from passes over that period. The Bearkats have been struggling asd they rank 6th in rush yards (89.8 per game) and 17th in rushing yards allowed (181.6 per game), respectively, indicating their lackluster performance both on offense and defense this season.
The Western Kentucky team, on the other hand, averaged 28.9 points per game including 34 touchdowns and won 5 of their first 9 games. The Hilltoppers averaged 273.3 yards per game and scored 22 touchdowns (along with seven interceptions) through the air. They fell to 3-3 in Conference-USA play and 5-5 overall after losing to the New Mexico State Aggies 38-29. In the fourth quarter, Austin Reed, the quarterback for Western Kentucky, delivered a 57-yard pick-6. He concluded the game with 270 yards, 3 TDs and 1 interception. Running back Elijah Young led the team with 3 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, in addition to adding 80 rush yards.
The Hilltoppers have had a difficult time running the ball lately; in 2023, they are 3rd-worst in rush defense (211.9 rushing yards allowed per game) and 24th-worst in rushing offense (117.3 rushing yards per game).
