The Mountain West and the MAC square off in Fresno on Saturday in the fourth week’s penultimate game before the finale in Hawaii. This weekend will be the last for both Kent State and Fresno State in non-conference action before they begin league play in Week 5.
The win puts Kent State in the win column for the first time this season, and it was a rather easy one. Two MAC teams have fallen victim to FCS opponents so far this season, but the Golden Flashes avoided becoming the third on Saturday. Before the start of the fourth quarter, they had a 38-0 lead after crushing Central Connecticut by four touchdowns.
Now that they’ve experienced the joy of a winning locker room under first-year head coach Kenni Burns and with little starting experience, this group should be ready to take on the West Coast in confident fashion for their next game.
In their opening victory, what did Kent State do right? The Golden Flashes got back to their power rushing roots from the Sean Lewis era, racking up 295 yards on the ground, after scoring just 12 points combined in Weeks 1 and 2, all on field goals. Former running backs coach and current offensive coordinator Matt Johnson has kept the same up-tempo offensive scheme as his predecessors.
The Golden Flashes and Bulldogs have taken different paths this season. Kent State failed to score in tough road games against UCF and Arkansas, but the Golden Flashes got their first victory of the Kenni Burns era on Saturday with a 38-10 thumping of Central Connecticut of the FCS.
Fresno State, meanwhile, is looking for its first-ever berth in the New Year’s Six since it is one of just two undefeated teams in its conference. The Bulldogs started the season with a thrilling victory at Purdue and followed that up with a road shutout of Arizona State last Saturday. On the other hand, Fresno State had its toughest game of 2023 at home, a 37-34 overtime victory over FCS Eastern Washington.
