You’ve been hearing about what a terrific athlete John Rhys Plumlee is all offseason, and he finally showed it last week. Plumlee piled up 371 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, albeit against a weak Kent State club. Plumlee is skilled enough to be a concern for a Boise State defense that was recently scorched by Washington, despite the fact that he made some poor decisions and had three turnovers in the game.
The senior defensive end for UCF, Josh Celiscar, continued his stellar play from the previous season against Kent State, recording seven tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Celiscar will be looking to limit the damage that Boise State running back Taylen Green can do with his legs and arms. If the Knights are going to repeat their Week 1 performance against Kent State, when they wreaked all sorts of havoc, the defensive line must be led by Celiscar.
Taylen Green, Boise State’s quarterback, struggled against Washington this past weekend, going 19 for 39 for 244 yards and one touchdown with two picks. Ashton Jeanty, although only scoring once, had a fantastic day. Ten carries for a total of 44 yards and a touchdown for Jeanty, and four catches for a total of 109 yards (27.3 ypc) and a touchdown. Jeanty, who ran for 821 yards and seven touchdowns for the Broncos last season, leads the team in returning rushers.
Although Boise State’s cornerback Jaylen Clark played well against Washington, the team’s 56-19 loss leaves little to cheer about. Clark was one of the few bright spots on the Broncos’ defense in Week 1, recording six tackles, two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. He will be a key contributor on Saturday if Boise State is to pull off the shock against UCF.
The question is whether or not John Rhys Plumlee can maintain production while reducing waste. Plumlee’s two interceptions and fumble were negligible against Kent State but would have been disastrous against Boise State. Can he maintain his high level of play against what should be a more formidable defense this week while also being more careful with the ball? Time will tell, but if he doesn’t, Boise State is competent enough to send UCF packing.
