The first week of the college football season is in the books, and the NC State Wolfpack passed their first test on the road against the UConn Huskies without taking any early season damage. The former ACC rivalry game between NC State and the Fighting Irish, is widely regarded as a true-peak preview of the 2023 campaign.
NC State failed to cover the 14-point spread against the Huskies on Thursday, dropping them to 0-1 on the new season after finishing 4-9 against the spread a year ago. After opening the season with a win over Navy in Dublin, Ireland, Notre Dame is 2-0 against the spread thus far this season.
For the first time since 1975, Notre Dame has started a season without allowing a score. However, the Fighting Irish’s first two opponents this year were Navy and Tennessee State.
Former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman transferred to NC State for his senior year and is expected to be a popular figure among Wolfpack fans. Hartman has accounted for nearly 450 yards and six touchdowns through two games, good for the second-best QBR in college football through the first weekend of the season.
Hartman has had a 1-2 record against NC State in their three career meetings. Hartman has thrown for 307 yards per game while completing 55% of his passes in those contests. Hartman has thrown six touchdown passes and six interceptions in the three games.While Hartman has faced Tony Gibson and the Irish defense before, Brennan Armstrong will be facing them for the first time this Saturday.
Next week’s victory over Virginia Tech will depend on NC State developing a consistent offensive strategy. Last year, NC State’s 8 rushing touchdowns were good for 12th in the ACC. The Wolfpack’s offensive line failed to protect even against a lesser UConn defensive front, resulting in two of the team’s three touchdowns in the season opener coming on Armstrong scrambles.
NC State needed a playmaker to step up over the summer. Week 1 results show that the Pack’s offensive line is the team’s biggest weakness as they head into their home opener against the Bears.
