Game Preview

On September 9, 2023, at Williams Stadium, the Liberty Flames (1-0) will meet the New Mexico State Aggies (1-1). In their most recent match, the Flames faced up against the Bowling Green Falcons and came out on top, 34-24. The last time we saw the Aggies, they were winning 58-21 over the Western Illinois Leathernecks.

New Mexico State blew down Western Illinois 58-21 on opening night of the football season thanks to strong performances from quarterback Diego Pavia (317 yards, 2 TDs) and running back Star Thomas (96 yards, 2 TDs). Pavia threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns, one to Bryce Childress for 75 yards and another to Jonathan Brady for 80 yards, both in the third quarter. Brady ended the game with 102 receiving yards on four receptions.

Jamey Chadwell, the new head coach at Liberty, has now won 100 games in his coaching career. He has worked at four different schools, the most recent being Coastal Carolina. Liberty, who are newcomers to Conference USA this season, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter thanks to Singleton’s 36-yard return of a Connor Bazelak throw.

Bazelak was intercepted by Brylan Green, Quinton Reese, and themselves in the second quarter. After the Falcons had trimmed the lead to a touchdown, linebacker Jerome Jolly Jr. intercepted quarterback Camden Orth twice in the second half.

Singleton made it 21-0 after a 2-yard touchdown run by Billy Lucas and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Salter to Vaughn Blue. Twenty seconds before halftime, Bowling Green scored twice in quick succession following a Liberty field goal: on a 14-yard run by Ta’ron Keith and on a 76-yard return by BG Simms of a field goal attempt blocked by Dontrez Brown.

In the second quarter, Bowling Green’s first drive resulted in a field goal, bringing the score to 24-17. After each side scored a touchdown through the air, Jolly intercepted passes on the Falcons’ following two attempts. The first was at the Liberty 17 and the second was at midfield, where the Flames converted for the game-winning field goal with 2:52 remaining.
