The Detroit Lions, who have won four of their last five games, take on the Packers in Week 18 with the winner potentially securing the final postseason seed in the NFC. Detroit needs to defeat the Packers in order to get to the playoffs while also needing Seattle to lose or draw. Green Bay, meanwhile, merely has to win in order to move to the playoffs.
Let’s be honest, it’s pretty amazing that Detroit is still battling for its playoff chances in the last week of the regular season. The Lions were an underwhelming 1-6 at one point this season and were set to once again own a top-5 NFL Draft pick.
With a victory over their longtime division foe in Week 18, Dan Campbell and his staff will have done an outstanding job of keeping this club together, and they currently hold an 8-8 record and are in position to qualify for the 2022 postseason.
The performance of Detroit’s offense has been the main storyline during the entire season. The Lions have averaged the fifth-most points per game in the NFL through 17 weeks, and at times they have appeared virtually unbeatable.
But they’ll face a challenging test this week against a Packers defense that has become more active lately. Green Bay has allowed the eighth-fewest points per game over the last three weeks, which is a major factor in why they’re even in a situation where they’re comparable to Detroit.
Now if we take a look at the Green Bay Packers, it wasn’t that long ago that discussions regarding whether or not Jordan Love needed to be given time as the starting QB down the stretch of what seemed to be a lost season.
Four weeks later, Green Bay has won four straight games to put themselves in a “win and in” situation heading into Week 18. The Packers’ defense is mostly to blame for their current predicament, despite the fact that Rodgers has done enough to keep the offense moving and reliably gaining first downs.
