The NFC North top team, the Detroit Lions and Baker Mayfield will face the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth week of the 2023 NFL campaign.
The Lions easily defeated the Panthers to move their record to 4-1 and pick up their third straight victory. After their bye week, the Buccaneers host the Lions during a late kickoff. Despite having an injury entering into the bye week, Mayfield was present for Oklahoma’s victory against Texas and is expected to be good for this week’s matchup.
Due to having one of the most potent attacks in football, the Lions are demonstrating why they were the rightful favorites in their division. With a 3-1 record thus far, the Buccaneers, on the contrary, have been one of the biggest surprises of this campaign. Their defense is expected to be the best the Lions have seen this season, and Baker Mayfield has proven excellent.
In terms of defensive DVOA, the Bucs defense ranks sixth in the NFL, but more significantly, it is second in pass defense DVOA. They are more than prepared for containing Jared Goff and the Lions’ passing threat thanks to their strong secondary. Amon-Ra St. Brown skipped the game the previous week due to injury as well. Jahmyr Gibbs, their rookie running back, was also absent from the Panthers game. If those players miss again or fail to perform at their peak, it will just make Jared Goff’s job more difficult facing this elite defense.
To begin the season, the Lions’ defense has played exceptionally well. They have been among the league’s best units ever since Patrick Mahomes was restrained to begin the season. However, they are experiencing secondary pain from their wounds. Emmanuel Moseley, a cornerback, will unfortunately miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL tear. Additionally, it appears that CB Brian Branch’s ankle injury will prevent him from playing in his second straight game. This might be a challenging week for the wounded Lions secondary as they face one of the top WR tandems in the league with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
