Game Preview

The Washington Commanders and the Arizona Cardinals both had subpar seasons in which they were eliminated from postseason contention. One of these teams will enter the 2023 season with a chance to turn things around. As Arizona kicks off what seems to be a long season full of pain for their fanbase, this spread is the second highest of the weekend.

Kliff Kingsbury was fired after the Arizona Cardinals lost their final seven games of the 2017 season. During that same period, they also suffered the devastating loss of Kyler Murray, who has yet to fully recover from a torn ACL. Since then, they hired Jonathan Gannon, whose coaching abilities are unclear. They also released players including DeAndre Hopkins, Zach Allen, Marcus Golden, Byron Murphy, and Rodney Hudson in addition to J.J. Watt (who retired).

Arizona’s season was doomed from the start, but the team made some more questionable moves at the end of training camp that only made things worse. They basically handed away former first-round pick Isaiah Simmons and traded for Josh Dobbs. Gannon has not yet named a quarterback for Week 1, but whether it will be Dobbs or youngster Clayton Tune likely won’t make much of a difference. This squad appears destined for last place.

Washington’s selection of quarterback Robert Griffin III in the 2012 draft did not pan out. For better or worse, the organization ultimately decided not to sign Kirk Cousins to a contract. Since Cousins’ departure in 2018, the team has tried a number of different quarterbacks in an effort to find a replacement.

These include Alex Smith, Case Keenum, Kyle Allen, Dwayne Haskins, Taylor Heinicke, and Carson Wentz. Sam Howell was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft, and it looks like he’ll get an opportunity to start right away.

This team has plenty of talent. Having a healthy Chase Young back on defense has made it reliable for years. Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, Antonio Gibson, and others provide the offense with a plethora of options at the skill positions. With Howell in top form, this squad has a real shot at making the postseason. If he doesn’t succeed, Washington’s hunt for a starting quarterback will go into a tenth season.
