Despite “America’s Team” 2022 season ending in disappointment, they are still considered contenders for the Super Bowl. For the first time in 27 years, they will try to play in the championship game. Dak Prescott still has dynamite weapons in CeeDee Lamb and Tony Pollard, and their gritty defense is anchored by first-team all-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons.
Keep an eye out on Parsons during Sunday Night Football. After recording 13.5 sacks in 2020, he is the preseason favorite for Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. The Cowboys’ defense, and their pass rush in particular, relies heavily on Parsons. Last year in Week 12 he had two sacks against the Giants, so he’ll be out to get Daniel Jones again.
The 2022 season was an unexpectedly successful one for the New York Football Giants, as they not only made the playoffs but also won their first postseason game since their Super Bowl 46 victory. Brian Daboll, the team’s head coach, was selected as the AP’s coach of the year. The team re-signed Saquon Barkley after a contract dispute, giving quarterback Daniel Jones a huge boost as he tries to win back the division from Dallas after a successful 2017 campaign.
Saquon Barkley has signed a one-year contract with the Giants and reported to training camp in full form. Last year was his comeback year, and he hopes to expand on his 4.4 yards per run on the ground and 57 grabs for 338 receiving yards he had. This is a pivotal year for his future, so it will be interesting to see how he does.
New York has a distinct edge in this game due to their superior coaching staff. While Brian Daboll has quickly become one of the league’s top coaches, Mike McCarthy—better known as Jerry Jones’ “yes man”—may be one of the worst. The Giants are a young club that should be able to improve even further following their stellar 2022 season. However, if Dak Prescott can’t fix the Cowboys’ turnover problems, the team could be headed in the wrong direction.
