Several NFC playoff positions are still up for grabs, especially after the Week 1 results of 2023 playoff teams like the Giants and Vikings. Both the Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers had new starting quarterbacks in 2023 after missing the playoffs the previous year.
The Jordan Love era has begun, and it seems promising so far. For 245 yards and three scores, Love completed 15 of 27 passes. Even without fellow wide receiver Christian Watson, he performed admirably. With a completion percentage of 55.6%, Love will struggle against stronger opponents. Green Bay’s new offensive was excellent, not fantastic, but the team is happy with 38 points.
While the wisdom of selecting a running back in the first round of the NFL draft is debatable, Robinson’s skill is not. As evidenced by his amazing juke after collecting a ball in the flat that turned a loss into a touchdown in Week 1, Robinson clearly has a flair for the dramatic. When player 7 is on the field, focus all of your attention on him. He completed the game with a total of 56 yards (10 carries) on the ground, plus 27 yards passing and a score.
The Falcons won 24-10 on the scoreboard, but the numbers aren’t quite as impressive. While Bryce Young and Carolina racked up 281 yards on the ground, Atlanta could only muster 221. Desmond Ridder was only 15 for 18 throwing for 115 yards, but he scored a touchdown and had no picks.
Arthur Smith has a firm grasp over his squad. He has a clear plan for his powerful offensive play. He favors establishing the run. The Falcons accomplished their goal, as Tyler Allgeier rushed for 75 of the team’s 130 total rushing yards. His 5.0 ypc was second only to Bijan Robinson’s 5.6 ypc. The Falcons averaged 4.9 yards per rush in 2022, good enough for fourth place.
The Packers allowed five yards per carry last season, good for 26th-worst in the league. They invested heavily in a strong defense with several first-round picks, but defensive coordinator Joe Barry doesn’t seem to care much about stopping the run. That’s been a major problem for the Packers, and it could come up again.
