The 24-year-old “Golden Boy” Daniel Zellhuber made his UFC debut after defeating fellow MMA fighter Lucas Almeida in a Dana White Contender Series unanimous decision. Since then, Zellhuber has a 1-1 record under the bright lights, with both fights going the full twelve rounds. Christos “The Spartan” Giagos, who is nearly a decade older and has a 6-6 record in the UFC, has a roughly even split between finishes and decisions.
There was anticipation for Zellhuber’s debut in the UFC. He is a tall, long-strided kickboxer who employs range, timing, and dynamism to pick apart his opponents. In his first attempt, Zellhuber disappointed the public despite being a heavy favorite. Even more unexpected was that a mediocre striker was able to outstrike Zellhuber on the feet.
In his most recent bout, he showed great resilience and an amazing blend of patience and dynamism. One worrying trend shared by both encounters is Zellhuber’s propensity to let his opponents linger. He makes smart use of his height advantage by jabbing intelligently and applying athletic but not excessive pressure on the opponent’s feet.
Giagos isn’t really technical, doesn’t care much about defense, and has erratic cardio. But every time he enters the ring, Giagos does it with the intention of winning. Despite attempting more than three takedowns each bout, Giagos is only successful 41% of the time. His strike differential is nearly even (2.86 landed to 2.85 absorbed).
Again, Giagos lacks technical proficiency and strong defensive fundamentals, but he more than makes up for it with his willingness to press forward and force his way into position.
At the outset of battles, at least, he does. Just like Giagos, Giorgio has trouble with cardiovascular exercise. In some battles, particularly those where he can wrestle on the offensive, Giagos can use pressure as a weapon for the entire three rounds. However, Giagos’s constant pressure can catch up to him in the second or third rounds of contests where his opponents can stuff his takedowns.
