Strawweight Pollyanna Viana has earned the nickname “Iron Lady” in the UFC, which translates to “Dana de Ferro” in her native Brazil. This weekend marks her return to the UFC following a pair of postponed bouts in April and May against Emily Ducote.
Iasmin Lucindo, who she will be facing, has only two fights under her UFC belt. Don’t discount the 21-year-old candidate because of his young age. Lucindo made her professional debut at the young age of 14, and she already has a 14-5 record, quite similar to Viana’s 13-5 record, albeit against much tougher competition.
Polyana Viana is a long-ranged attacker who excels in Muay Thai. She fights aggressively and intends to stand her ground; she does this by using excellent distance management to duck and weave out of harm’s way while landing her own blows from a safer distance.
In this regard, she frequently relies on a deft kicking game and counter boxing, with punches that resemble whips and pack a noticeable pain. Despite her lack of consistent knockout power, she is preparing to face Lucindo after a particularly savage KO victory over Jinh Yu Frey.
Lucindo would probably challenge any female boxer in her division to a fight if she had the chance. She is able to cut angles and circle her opponents into vicious boxing combinations thanks to her quick, bouncy footwork. When Lucindo is feeling more at ease, she steps right and uses a slap left hook to build up a powerful cross.
The more aggressive version of her we’ve seen isn’t afraid to unleash four or five blows at once, including a number of hooks. If her opponents try to avoid the power of her right hand by circling away, she will likely start throwing spinning back punches and back kicks at them.
Viana has a chance to win the bout, but she will need Lucindo to make several mistakes. Throughout her career, Lucindo has been aggressive enough to prevent longer fighters from kicking and picking her apart from the outside. If Viana can tag someone like she tagged Frey, she can knock them out, but Lucindo can do the same.
